We again traveled under sunny skies through small cities and towns and avoiding the interstate. The landscape gradually changed from gently rolling hills to barely a hill. Despite the need for rain, the sides of the road were green. Yesterday, our friend said that Killeen so far had gone 26 days without rain and temperatures above 100!

Our original plan was to head to Carlsbad and tour Carlsbad Caverns tomorrow. (Even though we were there last year, we never get tired of viewing the Caverns’ magnificence.) You may recall that we value flexibility in our travel plans and rarely make reservations. Since our return trip will take us past the Caverns again, we decided to wait until September when there should be fewer tourists.

Our route today took us through many small, rural towns along US 190, US 87 and TX 176. On several roads, we encountered little or no traffic which made driving a real pleasure. As we drove along, the scenery and the vegetation continuously changed.

Having changed our plans, we ended the day in a small town called Andrews, TX which is on TX 176 near the New Mexico border. Tomorrow, we will continue on our way to Phoenix, AZ. We know we won’t make it all the way, so we’ll find some place to stay, probably a little ways west of El Paso, TX.
