Day 3 (5 April 2024): Knoxville, TN – West Memphis, Arkansas

Today’s travels were pretty uneventful, so our report won’t be much more than a weather report.

We woke up just west of Knoxville to a beautiful blue sky, but by the time we finished breakfast, it had clouded over and was chilly. Despite that, we chose to tempt the gods and put the top down and turn the heater up full. I 40 is not a pleasant drive as it is a major truck route with lots of traffic, but there aren’t a lot of options in this part of the country if you don’t want to get lost.

We had purchased an intercom like motorcyclists use to communicate with each other so that Peggy could read aloud and I could hear the story. For the first part of the journey, during the morning, it worked pretty well, but later in the afternoon, the traffic was so horrific that I was not able to follow the story. It will work much better when we get off the major highways. Peggy had found a cute mystery/romance that’s good for making the time go by swiftly when we are driving long distances.

The one “event” for the day was crossing the Mississippi River from Tennessee into Arkansas. By the time we got there, the weather had cleared and it was a beautiful sight. Having arrived in Arkansas, we opted to call it a day. We are still on schedule to arrive in Killeen, TX on Sunday where we will watch the solar eclipse on Monday with good friends.

That’s about it for today. Tomorrow, we continue west.
