Europe: Day 46 (May 20)

We awoke to bright sun for our last full day in Beaujolais country. Since our plan for the afternoon was wine tasting, we spent a quiet morning catching up on chores. Wayne got the blog up to date complete with pictures (except for today) while Peggy focused on laundry.

DSCN1768The afternoon found us driving through some beautiful wine country. Before wine tasting, we had a light lunch at a cafe that was in a complex with a movie theatre, cinema, and city library that we found along the way in Macon.

We stopped at Domaine Champier, vineyards and winery that have been making wine for 4 generations. It is located in the Brouilly appellation area. The wine cellar (cave) appeared to be closed, but after ringing the doorbell, we heard footsteps and a charming gentleman greeted us in French wondering what on earth we wanted. Since he didn’t speak English and we don’t speak French, it was a little challenging, but fun. With the help of Google Translate and subsequently a friend of the host who came by, we were able to communicate. We asked our host to recommend his favorite, which he said was impossible since individual preferences and pairing with foods make a big difference. It was a difficult choice but we settled on 2 bottles and a genuine request from our host to return.

Since we were beginning to collect more wine than we can drink in the time remaining, we didn’t stop at any other wineries. (In France, they don’t charge for wine tasting, so one feels obligated to purchase at least a bottle or two after being treated so graciously and generously. So we spent the remainder o the afternoon meandering along back roads in wine country with great views. (On some of the roads we were glad we didn’t pass anyone in the opposite direction as there is only room for one vehicle on them.) It was a lovely wrap up for our time in Beaujolais wine country.
Bonne Nuit
