Day 8, Jul 25: Gallup NM to Jacob Lake, AZ

We set off today under partly cloudy/sunny skies. Despite the instructions of our GPS, which insisted we stay on the interstate, we took to the back roads on NM 602, NM 264, US 87 and US 87a to Jacob Lake which is just north of the Grand Canyon. We were rewarded with beautiful vistas and rock formations that can only be found here in the southwest (and almost no traffic).

The morning clouds gave way to sun followed by afternoon showers. (Ironically, our first rain of the trip has been in the desert southwest.) The weather forecast was for rain in Jacob Lake, but we decided that if it rains we’ll get wet and then later, we’ll dry out and otherwise ignore the prognosticators. Good thing we did, too, as we left all the rain on the dessert floor and had magnificent weather the rest of the way.

Colorado River

We crossed the Colorado River over the new Navajo Bridge which had replaced the original bridge in 1994. The original bridge, built in 1928 was not designed to take today’s heavy truck traffic. It is a a beautiful bridge and an amazing architectural accomplishment. The original historic bridge is still open to pedestrians and provides wonderful views of the Colorado River.

The weather gods smiled on us the remainder of the day and we set up camp at Jacob Lake. It was only the second time we had set up our new tent, and we are still on the learning curve, but after about an hour we were pretty well set up for the duration.

Our campground at Jacob Lake

By the time we were done, it was too late to visit the canyon, so we fixed dinner, washed up, checked out the nearby lodge and otherwise just chilled out for the evening. It is too hazy tonight and not good for star gazing so we’ll read our books and get an early start to bed. Tomorrow, we’ll go see the canyon.
